Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

China's Mid-Autumn Festival fell on September 24th this year. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, when the harvest moon is full and the rice is ready for harvest.  While it originated when ancient rulers would worship the moon in hopes of a good harvest, the present-day festival is very similar to our Thanksgiving.

Our tradition is to eat American moon pies (They are much tastier!) on the front porch as we admire the pretty, full moon.  This year, Krista picked up some traditional mooncakes at a local Asian market and shared them with us. Like most of the traditional mooncake flavors, it was not very sweet and filled with red bean paste (also a Starbucks flavor in China!). Everyone tried it but Juan was the only one who wanted more.😄 The rest of us stuck with our Little Debbie versions instead!
