Yesterday, Mandi was transferred to a rehab unit at DCH. This move will be much easier on everyone as Mandi is more comfortable with her surroundings and the family will be nearby. For the most part, the transfer went well; though, Andre' commented that all the roads need to be re-paved as it was a bumpy ride. Mandi has been able to wiggle her toes and move both feet. She is also able to lift her lower left leg. She has spent more time sitting up in a chair, but there has been no attempt to walk. The plan at this point is for her to remain in rehab for 4-6 weeks and possibly be in a wheelchair for 6-8 weeks.
Gabe on the other hand is not doing as well as we once hoped. He was only able to be off the ventilator for approximately 16 hours. He had to be put back on because he continued to have a lot of difficulty breathing on his own. He will probably remain on the vent through the weekend. A PICC line was administered to give fluids and draw blood. They did a repeat scan of his head which indicated bruising from the trauma but there is still no sign of brain damage. He had been running a low-grade temp and received IV antibiotics. On Monday, an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist) will conduct a bronchoscopy to check his lungs. They want to make sure there is nothing obstructing his airways that may be causing him to have difficulty breathing on his own. He is also receiving liquid nutrition through a feeding tube.
Tera plans to return home tomorrow, and she will be much better at providing you with updates on Mandi and Gabe's medical situation. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am not as familiar with the medical jargon. ; ) Hopefully, I have provided everyone with appropriate details and not too much damage has been done while I have filled in for Tera. = ) Again, your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.
